On May 3, 2022, Lizandro Osorio-Mejia and Kenneth Barios Aviles approached a woman on the Traction Line Recreation Trail and asked her for money, Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll, Chief of Detectives Robert McNally, Morris County Sheriff James Gannon, and Morristown Police Chief Darnell Richardson, and Morris Township Police Chief Robert Shearer said.
When the woman did not provide money, Osorio-Mejia pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her while Barios Aviles stood nearby, authorities said. Osorio-Mejia was armed with a rock at the time of the assault, authorities said.
Both suspects fled the area though they were arrested three days later, authorities said. Both suspects were unknown to the victim, authorities said.
Osorio-Mejia pleaded guilty in August to aggravated sexual assault, robbery and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, authorities said.
Barios Aviles previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft and was sentenced to 18 months probation, authorities said.
